motorcycle surfboard rack

You can now officially travel with your motorcycle and bring along your surfboard with this clever surfboard rack. This rack is made from stainless steel and bolts to the frame of your motorcycle. According to the website, Surfer Peg, it looks like you can basically haul anything around with this rack,  such as surfboards, longboards, sup boards and array of other large items. So it looks like this rack is pretty versatile.

At first glance, I thought this might be a little unstable, especially at high speeds, but according to the site, carrying the surfboard along side the bike in this manner acts like the tail fin of a jet. This helps to provide even more stability, or so I am told.

I do not own a motorcycle, but I suppose if I did have one, this rack would have to be a must. If you go to manufactures site it looks like you can tell them the make and model of your motorcycle and they will send you a note and give you some options about what will work for you. Hopefully some pricing info as well.

If anyone has a motocycle and has heard anything about this rack send me a note. I would really like to know how much this rack would cost to be added to your bike. Anyway, if you do have a motorcycle and like to surf, this surfboard rack may be worth checking out. Here is the main website.

vertical surfboard racks

I found these awesome do it yourself vertical surfboard racks that can be made for under $50 dollars. I think the vertical rack systems are the way to go for those of us with multiple surfboards that are used regularly. There is no better rack for ease of use and less hassle than the vertical rack. These vertical racks are definitely one of my favorite do it yourself projects. They also allow for easy expansion, for those who cant so no to another surfboard. I love the added eye hooks on the end of the dowels with the nylon to keep the surfboards in place. Surprisingly, to build these beauties you don’t need much. Here is what you need:

* a 2×4
* wood dowels (24″ per board)
* wood screws

These are the supplies for the more fancy racks.

* wood glue
* padding for the dowels
* padding for the boards’ tails
* a safety mechanism to hold the boards in place like hook and eye sets and nylon twine

Simple enough, I believe I read total build time was about 5 hours. Not to shabby for some quality racks.
You can check out detailed instructions, as well as pictures from blog El Portal Fridays.

If you know of any other DIY surfboard racks from others or ones who have made let me know and I will post them up.
As always, happy surfing.

Dakine rack pads

Surfboard rack pads are ideal for those with a SUV, existing roof rack, or after market rack, looking to lug their surfboard around. Surfboard rack pads are fairly cheap and come in a variety of styles and colors.

Installation of rack pads are simple and straight forward. Simple open, and velcro the pad over your existing racks. After you have installed your rack pads, you will need some type of strap to keep your boards in place. These racks are well worth the price, as they provide cushioning for your surfboard or other boards you may be transporting. Not only do rack pads keep your gear protected from scrapes and scratches from raw racks, but they keep it from moving side to side once strapped down.

If your new you surfboard rack pads, by far the most popular surfboard rack pads are Dakine rack pads. Dakine has a variety of colors you can use as well as a few patterned designs such as camo and checkered. You can check out the different colors at Dakine.

Not only to surfboard rack pads come in different colors, but different styles as well. You have the option to get either Aero racks pads or regular racks pads. Aero pads are designed to only pad the top of your crossbars and have a more sleeker look when installed. Regular pads pad the whole rack where installed and are rounded in shape. (Notice Below compared to above).

You can also choose rack pads that are different widths (long), allowing you to carry more surfboards or other larger items, such as kayaks. Be sure to take a minute to think about what you will be hauling before purchasing your racks pads. Regardless and without a doubt, surfboard rack pads and straps offer the most versatile type of rack system compared to other other surf racks. The options are almost endless. Now go surf!

Homemade Surf Rack

I found this free standing homemade surf rack made from plywood that could be ideal for holding your boards. This surfboard racks stores you boards horizontal and even folds in to itself so the rack will store flat for easy transport. According to the website, total build time is about 5 hours.

Supplies are short and include: 1 sheet of plywood, glue, hinges, and screws which will amount to around $40 USD. A jigsaw is also must for making the cuts.

The coolest thing about this rack is that the author provides a template in which you can use over the plywood to make your cuts. A detailed list of instructions are also provided. Not a bad rack for under $40 bucks.

You can get the template and detailed instructions @ http://members.shaw.ca/kevin_bartlett_175/plyracks.html

If you know of any other homemade surf racks let me know and I will post them up for others.

Inno Surfboard Racks

Mar-12-2011 By Serious Surfer

Inno surfboard racks are highly popular among surfers, especially the Inno Board Locker due to it’s ease of use and locking ability. If you have a pre-installed roof rack on your vehicle, I highly recommend checking out this surf rack. The Board Locker mounts to both aftermarket and factory crossbars. Once in place, the Inno uses a crane arm with attached strap, that swings open and close to secure your surfboard. Once your board is in place, simply shut the arm and connect to the locking mechanism. You can even ratchet this mechanism to tighten the straps to help secure your boards. Once the straps are tightened, you need the key to release the crane arm, thus freeing your surfboard. Inno boast this rack can handle 3 shorboards or 2 longboards. If you don’t carry your boards in a bag, it would be wise to invest in some rack pads rather than carrying your boards directly on your pre-installed racks. Check out the picture below for the Inno.

If you prefer a cheaper and non-locking version, Inno also makes the Crane Board Carrier that is installed and works in a very simliar manner. Crane arm system again, but instead of locking and ratcheting, you have a shorter crane arm and adjustable strap. Once it place, simple pull to tight. Once again, if your traveling with your boards without a surf bag, it would be wise to use rack pads to help keep your boards firmly in place.

Whichever Inno surfbaord rack you choose, you will find both relatively easy to use as well as to install. These systems are also quicker than the typical rack pad and tie-down strap combo, but they are much more expensive. Over $150 for the locking system, as compared to around $15 -$20 for tie-downs. Pads will be needed for both unless you have travel bags. Regardless of the hefty price, if you are a dedicated, daily surfer, Inno Racks are at least worth a look. You can learn and see more on their website below. Inno also has their own rack pads if needed. Happy Surfing.
