14d51fe6f3e3b71 Homemade Surf RacksIf you are in the need to get your boards off the floor and can manage some basic Bob Villa skills, building your own surf or board racks may be the way to go. I have found many articles online of people building their own racks for about half the cost.  Here are some pretty sick racks that can be built with some basic home depot supplies. Pic and supplies listed below.

Supplies and tools:

  • 2 pairs of board holders (main site recommends specific ones but and kind of rack will work)
  • 2 2×4′s ( you can stain or paint these to match your room)
  • 4 hanger bolts
  • Carpet samples for wall protection (furniture pads all work well)
  • Sandpaper (coarse, medium, fine – e.g. 100, 150, 220)
  • 4 1 3/4 inch screws to mount the board holders
  • Enough small nails to secure the carpet pieces, or furniture pads to the top and back of the 2×4′s
  • drill, hand saw, tape measure, etc.

I simplified it down a bit but you can check out all the supplies that were used and the step by step instructions by going to Kevin’s Blog. It seems he may have taken it down so if anybody wants to help with these instructions or suggest a better DIY spot. Let us know!

I also posted a few years back of the homemade bike rack for under $15 that can also be used. You can find it @ http://www.surfboardracksblog.com/surfboard-racks/the-do-it-yourself-bicycle-surfboard-rack-for-under-15

Here is also a link to a forum that discussed how to make homemade racks that can be added to your existing luggage racks for jeeps. Just scroll down a bit to find the post.

Also, check out this DIY video we just found for making a home made surfboard bike rack.

I have some more homemade racks that I will be posting later this week. If anyone has made their own racks and has pictures and supply list please let me know and I will put them up for everyone to see.

Surfboard Bags

14d51fe6f3e3b71 Surfboard BagsAfter you purchase your first surfboard not only will you want to find the perfect rack to transport it, but store it as well. This is where surfboard bags come in handy. If you are one a tight budget, I highly recommend at least forking some cash over for a surfboard sock. This can save your surfboard from an array of nuances such as dings, marks, and sun damage. You can even keep your sock or surfboard bag on when using most surfboard racks for added protection. If you want greater protecting that a sock offers you can either get a day bad or a travel bag. The type of surfboard bag you get will depend on your needs but here is a breakdown about the differences.

Day Surfboard Bags

Day bags are the lighter of the two and usually have a water proof to semi water proof covering material. Be advised the cheaper the board bag the less foam padding it likely has in it for protection. However this also means it will be lighter. Most surfboard bags are made for one surfboard only and offer good protection for basic day to day use. When purchasing one be sure to know the size and type of your surfboard for a snug fit. I would recommend always keeping your surfboard in a day bad when transporting as well.

Travel Surfboard Bags

Travel surfboard bags are used just as described, for traveling. More or less for airplanes. Traveling bags have much more padding than your typical day bag and offer the greatest amount of protection. These surfboard bags are also made to hold more than one surfboard, some even up to 4. You will typically hear these surfboard bags referred to as coffins. If your big on traveling with your surfboards, be sure to your travel bag comes with wheels. Carrying more than one surfboard can get pretty heavy.

Most nicks and marks come from transporting your surfboard to and from the beach. This can easily be reduced by using the correct surfboard bag. You will be amazed of how using a simple sock can keep your surfboard damage free, greatly expanding the life and look of your surfboard.
