After you purchase your first surfboard not only will you want to find the perfect rack to transport it, but store it as well. This is where surfboard bags come in handy. If you are one a tight budget, I highly recommend at least forking some cash over for a surfboard sock. This can save your surfboard from an array of nuances such as dings, marks, and sun damage. You can even keep your sock or surfboard bag on when using most surfboard racks for added protection. If you want greater protecting that a sock offers you can either get a day bad or a travel bag. The type of surfboard bag you get will depend on your needs but here is a breakdown about the differences.

Day Surfboard Bags

Day bags are the lighter of the two and usually have a water proof to semi water proof covering material. Be advised the cheaper the board bag the less foam padding it likely has in it for protection. However this also means it will be lighter. Most surfboard bags are made for one surfboard only and offer good protection for basic day to day use. When purchasing one be sure to know the size and type of your surfboard for a snug fit. I would recommend always keeping your surfboard in a day bad when transporting as well.

Travel Surfboard Bags

Travel surfboard bags are used just as described, for traveling. More or less for airplanes. Traveling bags have much more padding than your typical day bag and offer the greatest amount of protection. These surfboard bags are also made to hold more than one surfboard, some even up to 4. You will typically hear these surfboard bags referred to as coffins. If your big on traveling with your surfboards, be sure to your travel bag comes with wheels. Carrying more than one surfboard can get pretty heavy.

Most nicks and marks come from transporting your surfboard to and from the beach. This can easily be reduced by using the correct surfboard bag. You will be amazed of how using a simple sock can keep your surfboard damage free, greatly expanding the life and look of your surfboard.

Those who are fortunate to live close enough to walk to their favorite surfing spot, or those who must walk large distances after parking their vehicles, have many options that can help make walking long distances bearable with their surfboards and gear. Many options allow for hands free carrying, while others provide a more practical and less tiresome way to carry your surfboard rather than the traditional arm wrapping approach. The most practical way for one handed carrying is purchasing and using a surfboard bag. However, some these bags can be quite costly and are very limited to strict sizing. Meaning one bag per certain size of surfboard, or carrying becomes a little awkward or simply doesn’t fit. A cheaper and more versatile approach for those not wanting to dish out the cash for a proper bag is using some type of strap or sling system. One of my favorites slings is the sling from Curve shown below.

This is one of the more nicer slings I have seen and provides more support of your surfboard that most others. I do like the fact that it also has a carrying case embedded into the sling as well. Here is also a  popular one by FCS show below.

This bag also uses the same concept as the curve sling and also provides other storage space for other nick nacks. If you don’t like straps over your shoulders and you prefer to just carry your surfboard by hand check out this option.

As you can see, there are many different types of surfboard slings you can use to transport your surfboard to and from the beach. Obviously, the more simplistic the sling the cheaper they tend to be. If you are walking long distances to and from the beach it would perhaps be wise to invest in some type of surfboard carrier or surfboard sling to save your arm. This is especially true for all you long surfboard owners out there.
